What Is RCS Messaging? A Plain Guide for Indian Businesses
RCS turns the default SMS inbox into an app-like experience with images, videos, buttons and a verified business name. Here is how it works and when it makes sense.
QUICK ANSWER
RCS (Rich Communication Services) is the upgraded version of SMS. Business messages arrive in the phone's default messaging app, usually Google Messages on Android, but can carry images, videos, carousels, buttons and a verified brand name and logo. The recipient does not need to install any app. Where a phone cannot receive RCS, businesses usually fall back to plain SMS.
01
No app download needed
RCS messages land in the default messaging app, so people do not need WhatsApp or any extra app to see your cards and buttons.
02
Verified brand sender
Your business name, logo and verification mark appear on the message, which helps people trust it more than an unknown SMS header.
03
Rich, tappable content
Carousels, images, videos and buttons such as Call, Visit website or Book a slot let people act without typing anything.
What RCS messaging actually is
RCS stands for Rich Communication Services. Think of it as SMS rebuilt for smartphones. The message still arrives in the phone's normal messaging app, but instead of 160 characters of plain text, you can send images, short videos, a swipeable carousel of cards and buttons people can tap.
For businesses, the version that matters is RCS Business Messaging (RBM). Here the sender is a verified business "agent" with its name, logo and brand colour shown at the top of the chat. In India, most RCS business traffic reaches Android users through Google Messages, which is the default SMS app on a large share of Android phones.
How RCS is different from SMS and WhatsApp
- Versus SMS: SMS is text only and shows a six-character header. RCS shows your brand, supports media and buttons, and gives read-style engagement signals such as delivered and clicked.
- Versus WhatsApp: WhatsApp needs the person to have WhatsApp and you to use approved templates. RCS needs no extra app but depends on the handset and network supporting it. iPhones and older phones may not receive RCS business messages, so a fallback is important.
Many businesses use both. We explain the trade-offs in more detail in WhatsApp vs RCS and RCS vs SMS.
What you can send with RCS
- Rich cards: one image or video with a title, description and buttons.
- Carousels: several cards people can swipe through, useful for courses, doctors, loan products or property listings.
- Suggested replies and actions: buttons like "Call counsellor", "Open map", "Visit website" or "Interested".
- Plain text with branding: even a simple text message looks more trustworthy when it comes from a verified agent.
How it works, step by step
Getting started is simpler than most people expect, but there are a few steps.
- 1. Agent creation: your provider creates an RBM agent with your brand name, logo, colour, description, website and contact number.
- 2. Verification and launch: the brand details are reviewed and the agent is launched for messaging. Timelines vary, so plan a little buffer before a campaign.
- 3. Templates and content: you prepare the cards, carousels and buttons for your campaign.
- 4. Capability check: before sending, the platform checks which numbers can receive RCS. Numbers that cannot are routed to SMS or another channel.
- 5. Reporting: you see delivery, read and click data and can follow up with the people who engaged.
What does RCS cost in India?
RCS is usually billed per message, and the rate depends on the message type (basic text versus rich media) and your provider. Prices change, so please check current rates on our pricing page or ask for a quote rather than relying on old figures you find online.
A useful way to think about cost is not "price per message" but "price per interested person". Sending a rich carousel to everyone on a list can be wasteful. Sending it to the people who already showed some interest is far more efficient.
Where RCS works well
- Education: course carousels, campus video, open day invites and fee reminders.
- Healthcare: doctor profiles, health check packages and appointment reminders with a "Book" button.
- Finance: loan or insurance product cards with a "Call me back" button.
- Reaching DND numbers: RCS can be an option for reaching people who did not receive other channels, subject to your consent and compliance obligations.
How RCS fits into a multi-channel campaign
RCS is strongest as part of a sequence rather than on its own. In the Smart Growth AI Campaign, a voice call goes out first and the system tracks how long each person listened. People who listened for 10 to 25 seconds, the "partially interested" group, receive an RCS carousel with up to 10 image or video cards. People who listened longer get a WhatsApp template, and anyone RCS cannot reach gets an SMS fallback. That way the richer, paid message goes only to people who showed some interest.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Sending RCS without an SMS fallback, so non-RCS phones get nothing.
- Overloading a card with text. Keep titles short and let the image do the work.
- Using unclear buttons. "Talk to a counsellor" is better than "Click here".
- Ignoring opt-outs. Every channel, RCS included, needs a clear way to stop messages.

FAQ
Questions people ask
Do customers need to install an app to receive RCS messages?
No. RCS business messages arrive in the phone's default messaging app, which on most Android phones in India is Google Messages. The phone and network need to support RCS. If they do not, a good platform sends the message as SMS instead.
Can iPhone users receive RCS business messages in India?
Support depends on the iOS version, the carrier and whether business messaging is enabled in that market, and this has been changing. Treat iPhone reach as uncertain and always keep an SMS or WhatsApp fallback so nobody on your list is left out.
Is RCS the same as WhatsApp?
No. WhatsApp is a separate app owned by Meta and uses approved templates through the WhatsApp Business API. RCS works inside the default SMS app and is driven by Google's RCS Business Messaging. Many businesses use both, picking the channel by audience and purpose.
How much does an RCS message cost?
RCS is generally charged per message and the rate depends on the message type and provider. Rates change over time, so check current rates on the Smart Growth AI pricing page or request a quote for your volume.
Do I need DLT registration for RCS?
RCS Business Messaging uses its own agent registration and verification rather than the SMS DLT template system. However, your SMS fallback still needs DLT-registered headers and templates. Your provider should confirm current requirements before launch.
