CHANNEL COMPARISON
WhatsApp vs RCS: Which Channel to Use, and When
Both send rich messages with images, videos and buttons. They differ in who they reach, what they cost and what the person must do first.
QUICK ANSWER
Use WhatsApp when you want a two-way conversation with people who have opted in, and need chatbots, inbox and payment links. Use RCS to reach Android users in their default messages app with rich cards and carousels, including people not on your WhatsApp list. Many Indian businesses use both: RCS for wider, lower-cost reach and WhatsApp for interested people.
01
WhatsApp for conversations
Best when you need replies, chatbots, a shared inbox, payment links and ongoing contact with people who opted in.
02
RCS for rich reach
Branded, verified messages with carousels and buttons in the default Android messages app, no extra app needed.
03
Both, by interest level
Send RCS to the partially interested and WhatsApp to the highly interested, so spend follows interest.
The quick difference
WhatsApp Business API messages arrive inside WhatsApp, an app nearly everyone in India already uses for chatting. RCS Business Messaging arrives inside the phone's default messages app, mostly Google Messages on Android, and looks like a richer, branded version of SMS. Both can carry images, videos, buttons and a verified business name. The real differences are in reach, consent, cost and what each is best at.
Side by side
Where the message shows up
- WhatsApp: in the WhatsApp app, next to family and friends' chats.
- RCS: in the default messages app on supported Android phones, where OTPs and SMS also arrive. Support on other phones depends on device and carrier.
Who you can message
- WhatsApp: people who have given you consent, using Meta-approved templates for business-started messages.
- RCS: people on RCS-capable phones, which in our campaigns is also useful for reaching DND or failed numbers where other channels did not land.
What it is best at
- WhatsApp: two-way chat, chatbots, shared team inbox, forms, payment links, ongoing updates and support.
- RCS: eye-catching one-way promotions such as carousels of up to 10 image or video cards, with buttons to call, visit a link or reply.
Cost
Both are paid per message, and rates vary by message type and provider. As an example used in our campaign planning, RCS has been around ₹0.19 per message and a WhatsApp marketing message around ₹0.89, before GST. These are example rates only; your quote may differ. Check our pricing page for current plans.
When to choose WhatsApp
- You want people to reply, ask questions and book or pay inside the chat.
- You are sending ongoing updates such as fee reminders, appointment confirmations or order status.
- You need a team inbox where staff can pick up conversations.
When to choose RCS
- You want a rich, branded promotion to reach a wide Android audience at a lower per-message cost.
- You want to show several courses, packages or products as a swipeable carousel.
- You want a fallback for numbers where WhatsApp or voice did not get through.
Using both in one campaign
The most efficient setup is often not "WhatsApp or RCS" but "which one for whom". In the Smart Growth AI Campaign, a short voice call goes to the full list first. People who listen 10 to 25 seconds are treated as partially interested and get an RCS carousel with up to 10 videos. People who listen past 25 seconds are treated as highly interested and get a WhatsApp template with course videos and details. DND or failed numbers get an RCS attempt, and anything still undelivered gets an SMS.
In our 3 lakh student worked example, sending only the right channel to the right group brought the illustrative total down from ₹2,47,210 to ₹1,00,501 including GST, a saving of about 59% on that example. Your actual numbers will depend on your list and rates.
Common mistakes
Sending the same promotion on both channels to the same person is the most common one; it costs twice and annoys people. Another is using WhatsApp marketing templates for cold lists, which can hurt your quality rating. A third is treating RCS as guaranteed reach; plan an SMS fallback for phones it does not support.
Use RCS to spark interest widely. Use WhatsApp to continue the conversation with people who showed interest. Learn more about each on our RCS Business Messaging and Official WhatsApp Business API pages.
FAQ
Questions people ask
Is RCS cheaper than WhatsApp?
Often, yes, for promotional messages. In our example planning rates, RCS was around ₹0.19 per message and a WhatsApp marketing message around ₹0.89, before GST. Actual rates depend on message type and your quote, so check current pricing before planning.
Does RCS work on iPhones?
RCS Business Messaging mainly reaches Android phones with a supported messages app such as Google Messages. Support on other devices depends on the phone and carrier, so plan for RCS as an Android-heavy channel with SMS as a fallback.
Can customers reply to RCS messages?
Yes. RCS messages can include reply buttons and suggested actions, and people can type replies. For longer conversations, chatbots, a shared inbox and payments, WhatsApp is usually the better fit.
Do I need opt-in for WhatsApp?
Yes. Meta requires businesses to have consent before sending WhatsApp messages, and business-started messages must use approved templates. Good opt-in practice also protects your quality rating and the messaging limits on your number.
Should I use WhatsApp or RCS for an admission campaign?
Both can help. A common approach is RCS carousels for students who showed some interest, and WhatsApp for those who showed strong interest, so you spend more only on people more likely to enrol.
