LEAD SCORING
Using Listen Duration to Score Leads from Voice Calls
How long someone listens to your voice call is a strong, free signal of interest. Use it to decide who gets a WhatsApp, an RCS card or nothing at all.
QUICK ANSWER
Listen duration is how many seconds a person stayed on your IVR voice call. It is a simple interest signal: people who hang up in under 10 seconds are usually not interested, 10 to 25 seconds suggests partial interest, and 25 seconds or more suggests strong interest. Pressing 1 is the strongest signal. Use these bands to choose each person's follow-up.
01
Free interest signal
Every answered call already tells you how long the person listened. No forms, no extra cost to collect it.
02
Pay only for interested people
Send costlier WhatsApp and RCS follow-ups only to people who listened long enough to show interest.
03
Better agent focus
Counsellors and sales teams can start with the highest-scoring leads instead of calling the whole list.
Why listen duration works as a lead score
When you send a voice call to a large list, every person who answers makes a choice within seconds: hang up or keep listening. That choice is honest. Nobody listens to 25 seconds of a coaching admission message out of politeness. Listen duration is therefore one of the simplest and most reliable early signals of interest you can get, and you get it for every answered call without asking anything.
Simple interest bands
You do not need a complicated model. Start with three bands plus key presses:
- Under 10 seconds: not interested. They heard who was calling and hung up. Do not spend more money on them in this campaign.
- 10 to 25 seconds: partially interested. They listened past the hook but not to the end. Worth a low-cost, visual follow-up.
- 25 seconds and above: highly interested. They heard most or all of the clip. Worth a richer follow-up with full details.
- Pressed 1 (or 2): hot lead. They asked to talk or asked for details. Connect immediately.
These cut-offs suit a clip of around 30 seconds. If your clip is longer or shorter, adjust the bands so "highly interested" means people who reached your main offer and call to action.
What follow-up each band should get
- Not interested: no paid follow-up. They still receive the general thank-you SMS with your number, in case they want to call later.
- Partially interested: an RCS carousel or video brochure with up to 10 image or video cards and simple buttons.
- Highly interested: an Official WhatsApp template with course or product videos, highlights and benefits.
- Hot leads: live transfer to an agent, then WhatsApp follow-up with a personalised message and counsellor contact.
How it works in practice
- Step 1: Upload your list and a 30-second voice clip.
- Step 2: Calls go out in batches, for example 1,000 every 10 minutes with 5 live agents available for press-1 transfers.
- Step 3: The system records each person's listen duration and any key press.
- Step 4: Each contact is tagged with an interest level and routed to the right follow-up automatically.
- Step 5: All leads, with name, mobile, city, interest, listen duration and button pressed, flow into one Google Sheet for your team.
An illustrative split
As an example only, a list might break down as roughly 20% interested, 30% partially interested and 50% not interested. Your numbers will vary with your list quality, offer and script. The point is that if half your list is not interested, sending everyone an expensive message means half that spend reaches people who will not respond.
In Smart Growth AI's worked example for a 3,00,000-student list, using interest-based follow-up instead of sending every channel to everyone brought illustrative spend down from ₹2,47,210 to ₹1,00,501, a saving of about 59% on that example.
Making the score more accurate
- Improve the hook. A weak first line makes interested people hang up too, which blurs your score.
- Test two clips. Compare average listen duration between versions and keep the winner.
- Combine signals. A person who listened 20 seconds and then tapped an RCS button has moved up a level.
- Check with your team. Ask counsellors whether high scorers actually convert better and adjust the bands if needed.
Using the score beyond one campaign
Listen duration also helps later. You can build Meta ad audiences from people who listened 25 seconds or more, pressed a key or replied on WhatsApp or RCS, and retarget them with Instagram Reels or WhatsApp Status ads. That keeps your brand in front of interested people without calling them again and again.
Common mistakes with listen-duration scoring
- Treating everyone who answered as a lead. Answering is not interest. Many people pick up only to hang up.
- Using the same cut-offs for every clip. A 45-second clip needs different bands from a 20-second one.
- Ignoring the not-interested group completely. They still get the thank-you SMS with your number, and some will call back later.
- Not telling agents what the lead heard. Agent notifications that show which clip a person heard help counsellors start the conversation in the right place.

FAQ
Questions people ask
What is listen duration in IVR calls?
Listen duration is the number of seconds a person stayed on your automated voice call before hanging up or the clip ended. It is recorded for every answered call and works as a simple, honest signal of how interested that person was in your message.
What listen duration means a person is interested?
For a 30-second clip, a common starting point is under 10 seconds for not interested, 10 to 25 seconds for partially interested and 25 seconds or more for highly interested. Pressing 1 is the strongest signal. Adjust the bands to your clip length.
Is listen duration better than asking people to press a key?
They work best together. Many interested people listen fully but do not press anything, so listen duration catches them. Key presses identify the hottest leads who want to talk now. Using both gives a fuller picture.
Can I retarget people based on listen duration?
Yes. You can build audiences from people who listened 25 seconds or more, pressed a key or replied, and retarget them through Meta ads such as Instagram Reels or WhatsApp Status ads, following Meta's audience and privacy rules.
Does listen-duration scoring work for healthcare and finance too?
Yes. The idea applies to any voice campaign, whether a clinic health check, a loan offer or an insurance renewal. Adjust the clip and the follow-up content for your industry, and keep compliance and consent rules in mind.
